We are proud that our art museum was visited by known British artist Gerard Whyman, who, along with his Filipina wife Rosita, accepted my live hand, finger, and nail painting challenge.

Gerard Whyman is a seasoned British cartoonist and visual artist based in Newport, Wales, with a diverse portfolio spanning cartoons, fine art, and public art installations. His creative journey has taken shape over several decades through solo exhibitions, group collaborations, and public engagement projects.

Widely known for his sharp wit and expressive linework, Gerard has showcased his work at numerous cartoon festivals across the UK, including events in Ayr, Herne Bay, Shrewsbury, and Nottingham—frequently drawing live for audiences. He has also actively participated in group exhibitions with fellow cartoonists and the Cardiff Drawing Group, with his artwork exhibited in respected galleries throughout South Wales.

Gerard has held solo exhibitions at Barnabas Arts House (2017) and the Cwtsh Arts Community Centre (2019), both in Newport. His self-published cartoon collection, Oddly Distracted, captures his unique perspective and sense of humour. His cartoons have also appeared in renowned publications such as Private Eye and The Oldie annuals, as well as various international exhibition catalogues.

Beyond galleries, Gerard’s creative footprint can be seen in public spaces across Newport—on hoardings, disused shopfronts, and in community art projects. Notably, he contributed to the 2010 and 2012 Superdragon trails by decorating four fibreglass dragon sculptures with his original designs. His work even made a brief appearance on BBC1's The One Show, a charming milestone in his artistic journey.

With a body of work that bridges the humorous and the heartfelt, Gerard Whyman continues to inspire with art that is accessible, engaging, and distinctly his own.
